I have and I want to!
Quite a few of the mug rugs I recently made were cut from some small wall hangings that I didn’t love so much. That wasn’t so hard.
This time I want to re-organize this piece.
Every time I take it out, I have some “I should have done this” or “I should have done that” moments. And, yes, it’s all done and I could just take those moments to another quilt, but that still wouldn’t make me happy with this one.
What are my issues, you ask?
It’s a weird size for a horizontal orientation…and too big for the space I want to hang it in!
Don’t like the white space between ‘buildings.’
Don’t like the white space at the bottom, especially bottom left.
Want to teach it as a class, but this is not a good sample from which to teach.
It was put together quilt-as-you-go and it’s going to become cut-as-you-go!
I’ll keep you posted when I actually get the cutter out and start chopping. It would have been better if I had addressed these issues when it was still in pieces, but I was focused on finishing then, not the design. I know I won’t be happy until I re-do this quilt, so I might as well just sharpen that blade and get cutting!

If you remove the negative space between the sections, then add it back on one side and the top or bottom, it would be more interesting to me. Those three sections just don’t send me, but the piecing is fun and it could be tightened up a bit. Good design post, thanks.

It’s always good to review your design–it’s also better to review it * before* you finish things up! And I’ve only recently felt free enough to chop and re-align!

You know, I really think that you could probably cut a portion of this out and use it as a background for something else. You could still fuse a focal element onto it, and then maybe use some beads on it. Just a thought.

I enjoyed hearing your analysis of what you don’t like, and I agree on all points. I do like the individual “buildings” though, so maybe you will only chop on the outside edges. This might make a lovely three panel piece, possibly joined at the hanging edge, but with open space between panels. That way you could eliminate much of the white area.
But, if you do chop into the middle, I’m sure your progress will keep all of your followers buzzing with excitement! Can’t wait to see what you do!

I think the actual cutting and sewing will be very easy. I just have to decide if I might want it in three pieces or two, or re-assemble the whole thing after a bit of re-alignment.
