Do you dye?

Whenever I post results of a dye day here, I wonder how many people do their own dyeing. Do you feel like you know everything I’m going to say because you’ve been there and done that? Are you a meticulous dyer who records every gram of dye powder and every ounce of water? Or do you dip and dump, scrunch and twist and love the wildest pieces that come out of the dye pot?

To me, there is no reason to be a detailed record keeper unless you intend to be in the business of dyeing and need to have repeatable, consistent results. For the amateur like myself, basic “how to mix it and how to make it stay in the fabric” are the essential instructions and the rest is all fun and playtime.

Educating yourself on processes, materials and safety measures is never, ever a waste of time. The more you know, the more you can push the limits. Sometimes a little more carefulness and knowledge would prevent some do-overs and some “Can I save this?”  questions, but where’s the excitement in that?

I have learned that this is not my preferred rinse out procedure…

AJ rinseing

but when you have a helper, you work in the best way to utilize that help!!

For the first time, I tried dyeing some embroidery floss. I love variegated floss and wanted to try it for myself. Unfortunately, my helper and I did not have time to rinse that out today. I’ll show you those results next time.

  1. I love playing with the different colors and how the combine, folds, ties, pipes, and am beginning to experiment more with over dying prints that I bought as well as fabrics I didn’t like how the dye turned out. Have been experimenting with gelli prints, stencils, and stamping on some I don’t care for as much too. It is like Christmas when its time to rinse. Some that you open are fabulous and some not so much.

    1. It IS like Christmas when it’s time to rinse out! Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to wait for it to batch.

  2. I do keep track so I can repeat colors and figure out what went wrong but I am not a good at meticulous measuring. So no charts for me! I also do improv dyeing just for fun. Both work for me!

    1. I’ve pretty much decided that I can’t follow the rules for anything, so I’ll have to stick to improv dyeing!

  3. When I first began, I did the charts. I still have them. However, I prefer a more mottled color and surprise results today. When I need pastels, I just keep with the basics.

    1. I seem to be incapable of dyeing a pastel color! And I have to teach dyeing later this summer…I’d better practice some more!

  4. I too enjoy the fun and don’t chart. Only when I teach a beginning class after that is do your own thing except for the safety. I do embroidery thread with a little Color from each batch. In case I need some. Just have fun. Nice to have a helper.

    1. Teaching a beginner class is definitely when those safety procedures need to be emphasized. Then it’s straight for play time!
