Which way is up?

One of my beliefs is that a good abstract design is good in any orientation. That’s just a general statement, of course, and doesn’t always hold true, but quite often I make something and don’t know which orientation I like best.

This piece is one of those. I’ll throw up all the directions and you can give me your opinion!

North

South

East

West

West

Sometimes when I look at all the photos I can make a decision, but this time…not so much. Happy to have your opinions!

  1. Probably because I’m more of a mixed-media artist, I took another look at your delightful piece, and noticed that the teal beading is done on the more light-colored fabrics. I’m wondering if perhaps doing some beading on the BLACK fabric, would help in “filling out” the piece, and thus might lead to you being able to better decide on its best orientation. Although, of course, I’m very aware of the importance of “negative space” – still, I figured I’d share this thought I had.

  2. Another vote for the “west” orientation here, it seems the most “right” orientation to me, althought all views look good. I think the “on point” setting could also be a possibility.

    • I’m feeling that my original thought of good design working in any orientation is correct. This one must be a really good design, because the decision is hard!

    • I think that was my original intention, but I can’t remember anymore! Obviously, this piece needs to sit in ‘time out’ while I figure it out and make a final decision!

  3. I like north and west: north tumbling out and west rising up. Usually I go for designs where the motion reads left to right, but for some reason west is more appealing although it reads right to left.

On point would make the design more stable and solid.

What is the size? Can you put hanging corners in all four so that it can be rotated at whim?

    • Size–part of my ongoing series of 12 x 12″ pieces, mounted on canvas. There has been no real consensus on orientation, but curiosity about on point. It would be easier to set hanging wires for any corner than to try the same for a squared up presentation!

  4. I would choose south…is that because I am right handed? But I totally agree with Judy’s idea….on point makes it VERY interesting

  5. Any chance of putting it on point? If so, I’d put the corner with the small circle in it, at the top.
