Quilting

Frustration

Warning: this post is totally whining and it’s obnoxious even to myself, but it’s what I’ve got right now! And the pictures are only frou-frou eye candy!

When I was young and learning about quilting, I loved it so much that I thought I would never do machine quilting, only hand stitching. I soon learned that sewing machines were made for moving things along more quickly, easier on the hands and doing more, more, more. And my hands told me that I needed to use them differently. But I never really had a time when I couldn’t do some type of sewing.

Right now, I have wrist tendinitis—I think. Don’t know how it happened, don’t remember an injury, but it’s been a while now. I will be seeing a doctor on Tuesday because my self help activities have reached their ineffective limits.

Even though I do most things right handed, I am a leftie. I can rotary cut with either hand, but with my left hand/wrist out of commission, I can’t hold the cutter OR the ruler well enough to be accurate. I got some embroidery done, but only because I could lean the hoop on the tabletop, not hold it in my left hand. I cannot grip or hold a quilt to guide it in machine quilting…and I have three that are all ready to be done!

So I’m quite frustrated and it hurts and I’m whining about it. And I’m tired of having a limitation. And so lucky that this is the worst I’ve had to deal with……I know it’s small in the larger scheme of possible disabilities but in the self-centered, selfish part of my brain, it’s so exasperating and discouraging.

It’s good that we are taking a little trip so I don’t have to be around the studio NOT doing anything! Here’s hoping the doctor’s visit yields answers…AND quick results!!!

End of whining…….

  1. Ugh!
I am so using quilting for therapy right now that if I couldn’t at least do something, I would most likely implode! I know nothing about tendinitis but I know with carpal tunnel issues it’s always the nondominent hand that is worse. Apparently it does all the heavy lifting so the dominant hand can do the precision work. Once I started paying attention it makes all kind of sense!
I had tennis elbow twice and that was very painful. Cortisone and OT/PT plus instructions on how to,avoid injury have kept me pain free for over 10 years. I use yours is a quick and easy fix!

    1. I don’t care what name they give it–carpal tunnel or tendinitis–as long as they get it fixed. I’m a big believer in OT/PT and I’m more than ready to get that underway. I’m not so sure of cortisone shots…heard lots of negatives…I just need to be able to do what I do again!
