Designing Quilts · Non-traditional Quilts · Use Up the Stash

Section by section

Stash busting——go, go, go! Making the square in a square blocks was quick and I got them up on the design wall right away.

Aaand I trimmed them up and pretty much put them back in the same spots, with a few of the extras that I want to incorporate.

My process is to simpy throw things up on the design wall and move them around until they start to make sense and look good to me. Not very scientific or truly artistic. I rely on my years of experience, my personal color sense and whatever I can find to MAKE the pieces fit!

I made up a couple of blocks that were larger and a couple smaller than the rest, to ensure that I wouldn’t take the easy way out and sew only the squares together and still be left with a pile of scraps.

There are usually sections that start to come together, with kind of an “of course we fit” attitude. Once I find one like this, I sew it together and start to build from that piece.

This (above) is actually where I started. I figured that I made all these squares so I should at least have an area that honors that original plan.

I think this part will fit this way, but it leaves me with some weird spaces to fill.

And this entire top left quarter is very unresolved. Lots of work to do, but I had to leave for an appt. so I had to leave it hanging. I hate to quit in the middle of a good design session. When I go back to it, it feels like I take a huge amount of time to get into the process again. And we have a day of grandson virtual school to help with before studio time again.

Can’t wait! I love what I do, I really do!

  1. I love the way this is coming out. I like to work this way, too. Aren’t we lucky to have our art to keep us going?

    1. I have a tendency to hoard those text fabrics, then use them all up and turn around and order up another bundle of them! Right now I still have plenty but one more good text quilt will have me searching again!

    1. OMG! Turquoise! I didn’t realize how much I had until I started trying to use it up! But when I look at my shelves right now, I can see that I am making a dent in almost all of the colors. Still have waaaaay too much orange so I probably need to attack those stacks next. My use-up-the-stash goal is working!

  2. I love watching your process. How big is your design wall? I don’t have much space so I use a curtain that hides stuff in my open closet (I took off the doors because they were in the way!). I’d love to have something more secure, but not sure I have space for it. Anyway, would love to see what you use and why you chose black instead of white. Thanks.

    1. I have two 4′ x 8′ sections of foam insulation board. My son cut a bit off to fit my basement ceiling height and screwed them into the paneling. They are covered with charcoal felt and I went with the dark because I had white for years before we moved into this house and I wanted a change. It’s simple to throw up a piece of white on this wall when I want to design on a light background. You might want to consider putting your closet doors back on, with a thin layer of foam core board on top. Easy to stick pins straight in.
