Doing new things

There is nothing more exciting than starting a project with new and different materials. I have wanted to incorporate more paper into my work and I even took a class with Margarita Korioth to learn how to make her Infused Newsprint Cloth. I think I’ve looked at every YouTube video there is on combining paper and fabric! I love it, but simply have not played with any of this in a while.

I took out a pile of wonderful papers that I have collected to try and decide which paper wanted to work with me today.

The choice came down to a decision between delicacy and toughness. I chose this thick, stiff, textured paper to see how much damage I could inflict without destroying it.

What a champ! I stitched, I dampened and pressed, stitched some more, rolled and bent and twisted it, fused it…basically treated it like a piece of fabric.

You know, it takes just as long to stitch all those narrow lines on paper as it does to stitch them on a quilt! Sigh…The paper took everything I could give it and is ready to stand up to more. In case you’re wondering, the workout I gave it did not distort the paper. It was not square and straight when I began and I’ll trim it up when I’m done.

Good paper is worth every cent you spend on it. Looking forward to more paper games next time, maybe adding in some hand stitching, too. This piece of paper is wonderful and will have to stand up to more of my abuse before I’m done with it! And I have so much more in that stack!

BTW, my friends at USArtquest are having a sale Aug. 26-29. I’m not affiliated, but they have some of the best in creative products and a whole warehouse of paper!!! Locals–remember that this is in Chelsea MI and well worth the trip.
