Idea commitment

A few days ago I posted on Facebook that I have a book idea knocking around in my head, trying to get out. It’s been knocking for a while and I’ve not been ready to commit the time and energy it would require to create it. Every excuse is a good one…but not really valid!

I’m 90% ready to make that commitment now.

I’ve created many items over the last few years that would be good candidates for book projects. No commitments with these pictures–just floating thoughts!!!

Thoughts swirling…what can be taught and explained…what do I selfishly want to be only my own…hmmm! It will be sooooo much work, but I’m not sure I want to be beaten to death by the idea trying to escape from my brain.

It might be time.

It’s Blue Lake time again…may not be many posts for the next two weeks! Gives me lots of thinking time, since wifi is limited!

  1. All of those are so lovely, I would definitely be interested in a book. I personally, buy books that are more “how to” than just “inspiration” books, if that makes sense. I find I get more inspiration to actually go try something when I know a bit more of how to approach something, than just seeing something beautiful. Sometimes intricate, modern art quilts like yours look so intimidating – making it accessible would be mind blowing to me!

    1. That’s exactly what I like to do–show people how to get from plain to artsy! Not to have to rely on traditional designs or other people’s patterns. Every piece of art is just step by step, no matter how complicated the final piece appears!

    1. Teaching a bunch of kids is not always relaxing, but it sure is fun! I’ll enjoy it while I’m here and think about the book more when I’m back home!

  2. GO FOR IT!!!! As you know, I’ve written my share (7 and a DVD)……..some artists complain about the process……I totally loved it. Documenting your thoughts/ideas/inspirations is never a waste of time.

    1. It’s certainly not the process per se that holds me back. It’s having to do the same or similar several times to work out the kinks, make sure that I can explain it so that others can do it, and documenting the process in whatever way the publisher prefers–whichever way I do it, it’s usually a different way that they want! But I put my thoughts ‘out there’ this way to force myself to be committed and do the work! Sorting through my projects and processes now to see what will work best…it’s exciting and a long road at the same time. I believe I’m really ready again.

  3. Sounds like a wonderful idea. You are such a talented person and enjoy sharing with people. I’m definitely a person more interested in “art” quilts than “modern” and would love to own another of your books. The quilts you showed here hold so much information to share!

    1. I love modern quilts but what I want to create are more complicated pieces, and I want to show others how to achieve that. I guess I really do want to write a book!

  4. You have an extensive body of beautiful work there! Can’t wait to see what direction you take with a book.

    1. The direction I take and the direction a publisher wants…we’ll have to see if they match up!

  5. Kathy, I was organizing my stash and stuff this past weekend and came across your first book. I believe the book trying it get out will be worth the work as you will be giving all of us the gift of sharing your talent. I’ll be one of the first in line to purchase and will be happy to test things out if you like.

  6. In our quilt guild, it seems that there is a trend away from the more complicated to the more simplified. Especially the modern movement. You certainly have many ideas to choose from, but the “Art Quilt” group here has disbanded and is being replaced by the Modern Quilt group. I am still doing well with my art quilts at the Polish Pottery Shop, probably because people who shop there are looking for this type of decor.

    1. Most people who look for art quilts are looking to match their decor! I don’t care at all why–I’d only like them to buy! I like to encourage the modern quilt guild members, because it just keeps our fabric love growing!

  7. Good luck! After having submitted my medallions proposal to C&T, AQS, and Martingale, I’ve decided that self-publishing will be the route for me. I have that book and another to do. This summer has been so busy that little progress has been made other than that decision. While I’d rather not take on all the rolls required, it seems the primary one the publishing houses cover by themselves is graphic design and layout. (A big job!) The author is responsible for the vast amount of editing and a large portion of marketing, even in that world. So, I might as well take control and reap the majority of the benefit myself, rather than handing it off.

I hope your project goes well. If you’d like to bounce ideas off a neutral (but on-your-side) party, let me know.

    1. The graphics end is relatively easy for me and my daughter is a graphic designer, so she could help. It’s the marketing end that I’m not good at and DO need the publishing company for. IF I get another written…I’m not thinking self-publishing at all!
